Cued Articulation 1.9

The Cued Articulation system employs a series of hand cues designed to facilitate the teaching of individual speech sounds within words. This method proves beneficial for speech pathologists, speech and language therapists, remedial and recovery educators, as well as primary school teachers in classroom settings.

The hand movements are systematically structured, with each gesture corresponding to a specific phoneme. The cues provide visual clues about the manner and place of articulation. Additionally, colour coding is utilized to denote consonant sounds represented by specific written letters, enhancing visual discrimination and learning clarity.

Developed by Jane Passy during her tenure as a Speech Pathologist working with children experiencing severe speech and language impairments, the system was created to support auditory recall challenges through visual aids. Educators observed that implementation of these cues not only supported students with speech difficulties but also augmented overall phonological awareness among all pupils. The system encompasses cues for 26 consonants and 23 vowels.

This application serves as a practical reference tool, illustrating the production of each cue and its relation to corresponding sounds and spelling. It features interactive tables for consonants, vowels, and diphthongs, complemented by video demonstrations of each sound's articulation. The app includes animated visuals of mouth and throat movements, maintains the program's signature colour coding, and presents contextual examples within common words. It functions as an additional resource within the comprehensive suite of Cued Articulation materials published by ACER Press.
